We also learned how the seeds of later European conflicts were sown in the 17th century: the growth of the military state of Prussia that would eventually unite other German states into the nation of Germany, and conflicts between Great Britain and France that led to Britain's worldwide Empire, and the American revolt against Great Britain partly over taxes levied to fund the 7 Years' War.
Students studied for a terms and people quiz covering all of Chapter 5. We spent the rest of class learning about the Thirty Years' War and how it set Germany back for years; the rivalry between the Hapsburg and Hohenzollern royal families and the resulting War of the Austrian Succession and 7 Years' War; and the rise of the Stuart monarchs of England, their conflicts with Parliament (the house where people speak - parle), the English Civil War, the rule of Oliver Cromwell and the Puritans, the restoration of the monarchy under Charles II, and the Glorious Revolution which replaced James II with William of Orange and his wife Mary.

After a brief quiz over Chapter 5, sections 1 & 2, we spent most of class studying evolution of Absolute Monarchy in France under the bourbon monarchs. Beginning with Henry of Navarre, these kings built up a centralized French state with an absolute monarch at the head. Louis XIV is the epitome of this process. We took a YouTube field trip to the Palace of Versailles and worked on our concept map of European dynasties.
