Students used their New York Times Upfront 2014 Almanac to answer questions comparing five countries of North and South America. We learned the meaning of Per Capita GDP, Literacy Rate, and Life Expectancy. Paraguay is the poorest of the five countries. We finished class by watching and talking about a 60 Minutes report on a youth orchestra from Paraguay who perform on instruments made of trash.
Today we finished our study of Chapter 4. Students summarized information about the Spanish, French, Dutch and English colonies. We learned a little more about the settlement of New Amsterdam.

We discussed the Spanish, French, Dutch and English explorations of North America, paying attention to what motivated people from these countries and the differing kinds of settlements that resulted. We traced the development of New Spain, New France, New Netherlands and the English colonies, which led to England taking New Amsterdam from the Dutch and French territories in the French and Indian War.
We also learned how our Thanksgiving Day comes from the Pilgrims (Calvinist dissenters from the Anglican Church) who settled Plymouth in Massachusetts. To help remember the Duke of York, who took New Amsterdam for England, we sang a children's song, The Noble Duke of York. Students spent time answering the questions from Chapters 2 & 3. These are due by Friday, November 22. Today's class was on the meeting of different cultures: Islamic, European and Indian cultures as Islam expanded outward from Arabia. Across oceans, as China and Europe explored away from their homelands.
We shared answers that groups found last week from Chapter 2. Students spent some time reading Chapter 3, completing a map assignment and answering questions from Chapters 3 and 4. One story from this time is the voyage of Magellan around the globe. He was killed in the Philippines, which was named for King Phillip II of Spain. Many students knew about the typhoon which devastated the Philippines last weekend. We watched a CBS Evening News report about this. Be sure you finish reading and studying Chapter 3 by Wednesday. The quiz will be multiple-choice and cover people and terms. Students worked in small groups answering questions covering Chapter 2. We will share answers in a class discussion next Monday. We also had a quiz over people and terms from Chapter 2.
Some students retook the Renaissance art test today. Students saw their test over Chapter 1 today. Those who wish to may retake the Renaissance Art portion of the test on Wednesday. It will have a slightly different mix of art. Be sure to study the art examples on the Renaissance Art PowerPoint download.
We read part of Chapter 2 together in class. The chapter discusses the growth of the Ottoman Empire in Africa, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and India. We wrapped up our study of Chapter 1 by sharing Biblical texts on predestination and the elect - from our study of John Calvin. 10B watched portions of the latest film version of Shakespeare's play, Much Ado About Nothing. We learned a little about Shakespeare in Chapter 1 and will watch bits of his plays as they touch on subjects we are learning. |
