We reviewed basic World War II and Cold War information with Jeopardy PowerPoints. We then had a brief review of world religions and the Middle East.
We talked about the population increase that began in Europe with the Industrial Revolution, leading to the increasing urbanization of the world. That led us to a brief film about the increase in the world's population from 1 A.D. till the present, and projected to 2030, the year that most of our sophomores will celebrate their 33rd birthday. After that we watched a few travel films by Matt, in his Dancing series. I hope that all of you have the opportunity of traveling throughout the world over the next few years. Travel soon, before you are have the responsibi by work, marriage, children, etc.

This afternoon Daniel Busi taught a lesson on the war in the Pacific Theater. He emphasized the naval battles that ultimately gave the U.S. control of the sea and air and led to U.S. victory.
Disney made numerous cartoons and training films during WWII. We watched two of the most popular cartoons: Donald Joins the Army and Der Fuehrer's Face. Study a little each day for the final test: WWII, Beginning of the Cold War (from the beginning of the school year), Middle East. Hi fellow historians, While in D.C. with the 8th grade class and over the past few concert days I've let the blog slip. Sorry for not writing till now.
Today we learned about the Holocaust, focusing on how the Nazis gradually increased pressure on Jews and other undesirable peoples. We watched film made by the British Army as they entered Bergen-Belsen, a concentration camp in Germany. Near the end of the film, German townsfolk are made to see what had happened in the camp. They typically said "we didn't know." The big question at the end of class was "how can human beings treat other human beings this way!" It is a question that many have tried to answer in the years since WWII. The final test will contain an essay question on the Holocaust. Be sure you can trace the development of Nazi laws and actions aimed at Jews and others considered undesirable. |
