We used Google Earth to zoom out from Temple Mount to see and discuss the geographical setting of Jerusalem. Students learned one more thing about Islam today, the division between Sunni and Shia that occurred early in its history. Students read a handout summarizing the history of Israel, then completed a map of the region. We watched a Crash Course video about Zionism, the creation of Israel and the ongoing conflicts between Israel and its neighbors, including the Palestinian Authority and Hamas.
We listened to a song by Norah Jones, daughter of famous Indian musician Ravi Shankar. Students used an online game to practice naming countries of the Middle East (see the link on the homepage). I finished the lecture over India and Pakistan, then gave students time to answer questions over 18.1. This assignment is due next Tuesday. While students worked, we listened to music by Ravi Shankar.
We studied Chapter 18.1, learning how Hinduism and Islam developed in India, independence from Great Britain and partition, and current conflict over the disputed region of Kashmir.
We learned some basic facts about Judaism, Christianity and Islam, then learned about three places in Jerusalem sacred to these faiths. Students also began labeling a map of the Middle East.
Please download the Socrative app before class on Wednesday - we will begin using it then. Students took the Chapter 17 Quest today. Next week we begin learning events from Chapter 18. We will also learn more about Islam as we look at events in sections 1 & 4 of this chapter.
I led the students through a review of the Vietnam War, questioning students at random, leading to discussions and explanations. We watched a recent CBS News report about the injuries and deaths still being caused by unexplored bombs in Laos, dropped during the Vietnam War. We then watched a Crash Course video about Korea and Vietnam, stopping to check for understanding occasionally. I answered a few questions about the Vietnam map. Be prepared for a Quest (more than a quiz, less than a test) over 17.3-5 on Friday, including the maps of Korea and Vietnam.
EXTRA CREDIT. Who was the first U.S. soldier to die in Vietnam? On what date? Hint: this person's name was added to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Memorial Day in 1999. Email James Walters your answer by 9 pm Thursday for 4 extra credit points. Students had a map assignment to learn the Geography of the Korean War. Please complete this at home if you didn't during class. We discussed the Korean War, its causes, course, the firing of Douglas MacArthur and the truce which ended the fighting (but not the war). Tomorrow, Vietnam.
We completed an Everyday Edit at the beginning of class. We then finished discussing Origins of the Cold War. During this, we watched Duck and Cover, a 1950s educational film about how to survive an atomic attack. There will be a quiz tomorrow over 17.3 & 4.
