We began our study of the Cold War today. Students are reading Chapter 17, Restructuring the Postwar World, 1945-present. Today's lecture covered the origins of the Cold War, focusing on actions taken by Joseph Stalin and Harry Truman, including the iron curtain, the partition of Germany, the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan. We will continue our study of the Cold War next week.
Today we studied the five pillars of Islam. We will get back to learning more about the Middle East in a couple of weeks. Students took a quiz covering Middle Eastern geography and the three Abrahamic faiths.

The Three Abrahamic Faiths
In our first day of class we began learning more about Judaism, Christianity and Islam, the three Middle Eastern faiths that consider Abraham their father. Throughout the year we will be studying the events that have shaped the modern Middle East, the people who live there, and the ways in which Middle East events effect the rest of the world. We also read through much of the course syllabus, a PDF of which can be downloaded on the Downloads page of this web site. We will learn a little French vocabulary in World History. Today's word is "bonjour," the literal meaning of which is "good day." Students used a map handout to learn the locations of countries of the Middle East. There will be a quiz over the Abrahamic Faiths and c Welcome to World History. I love learning and teaching history and hope to share that passion with you this year. History is stories about real people from our past, and the wonderful, crazy, fascinating and sometimes just strange things they have done. It's gossip about dead people! If you want to understand why the world is as it is today, you have to understand how people of the past shaped the present. Their actions help to explain why we speak the language(s) we speak, eat the foods we eat, and play the musical instruments we play. Why there are conflicts between nations and peoples.
Throughout the year, I will use this blog to write about what we did in class, suggest books, films and music you might to investigate, and remind you of upcoming events. If you miss a class, be sure to check here to find out what we did that day. I will assume you read this blog when absent from class. When I am gone to a conference (Lectures in Church Music, October) or on the Washington D.C. trip (May), I will use this blog to communicate with you. Best wishes for achieving success in class! |
